There are over 599.719 dogs and hundreds of thousands of cats in Bali.

Bali has the biggest dog population in the world, compared to the area per capita. Means -Based on Dalem, et.al (2011) research, every 8 people in Bali will have one dog with them.

Moreover, the nature of Balinese in taking care of their dog is different; these dogs roam free in the villages and streets, making it hard to distinguish between owned and stray dogs.

This overpopulation problem is the root cause of the various animal welfare issue in Bali, including the endemic rabies virus since 2009, puppy dumping, neglect, abuse, and the dog meat trade.

Besides, the dogs of Bali are treated as less valuable than other animals such as cows, pigs, and chickens. Animal welfare law exists, yet is hardly reinforced due to a lack of acknowledgment of animals as sentient beings.

Our Animal Welfare Programs in Bali:

Sterilisation Program

Our sterilisation program, together with Karangasem, Buleleng, Denpasar, Badung, and Gianyar governments, offers mass sterilisation in their Banjars to prevent the spread of rabies virus. We have a full team of three vets, two dog catchers, and two administrative assistants. Until now, we have successfully sterilized over 25.715 dogs and cats in Bali.

About YSB Seva Bhuana was formed in 2013 and has two main programs; Subsidised sterilisation and Education.

The subsidized sterilisation is aimed at street animals and people with their local domestic animals (dogs and cats) who could not afford sterilisation fees in a clinic.

Meanwhile, the education program is aimed to give fresh education to local young people about animal welfare and the environment. After receiving its legal entities as registered Indonesian Yayasan in July 2016, we signed MOU with Bali Pet Crusaders as our sister organization.

These two main programs of Yayasan Seva Bhuana and Bali Pet Crusaders are now thriving to work with communities in Bali to support the government in achieving Rabies-free Indonesia in 2030.
